Within the last few years almost all states have started using Ignition Interlock devices as a punishment for a DUI offense or as a condition for keeping your driving privileges after a DUI. An ignition interlock system is basically your own person breathalyzer that you must blow into before starting your car and then periodically blow into while driving, aka a rolling retest. For example you will blow into the device once to start the engine, then after 10 minutes an alarm with sound and you will have to blow into the interlock again. After the first rolling retest, the alarm will only sound every 30-45 minutes. If you do not blow into the device when the alarm sounds, or if the device detects alcohol, it will start flashing your head lights and sounding the car horn. Despite what many people think, the ignition interlock will not turn of the engine of your car since this would cause an unsafe drive situation. Instead if it detects alcohol and the engine isn't currently running it will prevent it from starting, and enter a lock out mode that will stop the car from being started for 24-48 hours. If the engine is running when the failed test occurs, the car will be prevented from restarting once the engine is turned off.
The ignition interlock records the results of the breath tests, along with any disconnecting of your car's battery to discourage tampering. This log is downloaded each time you have the device calibrated, usually every 30-60 days. These logs are typically sent to your diversion or probation officer to be reviewed for any violations.
Expect to pay around $100 dollars to have the device installed, and a monthly service charge of $75. There really are no restrictions preventing the installation of an ignition interlock due to the make, model, or year of a car.
Since the interlock installer must be licensed by your state, most companies are very regional focused. You should have received a letter from your state's DMV listing authorized interlock installers. If not, contact your state's DMV for a list of ignition interlock installers, or do a local google search for a installer and contact them to confirm they are licensed for your area.
